SEPT. 4, 2001

On September 4, 2001 OWLA hosted a public meeting to discuss possible watercraft regulations for Owacso Lake.  About 40 people attended the meeting and expressed concerns about the subject.  A committee of volunteers agreed to research what regulations already exist and how they are enforced.  The results of the study on existing rules, other information and dates of future meetings will be posted on the OWLA website www.owla.org.  Please contact us if you wish to become involved or have questions about this issue.

JUNE 2001

The OWLA is sponsoring a committee to work on the possible implementation of boat speed, noise, and personal water craft rules on Owasco Lake.  After the recent great weather weekends we have received numerous calls and comments regarding these issues.  Some preliminary research has not revealed any existing county or local laws regarding operation, however there are some minimal state laws regarding operating distance from land and docks, exhaust baffling etc.  There are other lakes in the state that have implemented rules specific to their area.  Lake George, and Canandaigua Lake are examples that have regulations such as restricted zones, speed limits, hours of operation and motor noise.  There is some previous research and examples that will available as background from previous efforts that will be supplied, and the fact that Owasco Lake lies entirely in Cayuga County makes these types of rules more efficient.  You do not need to be an OWLA member to be involved, and it in fact it would be helpful to include all points of view on these issues including law enforcement.  So please call to be part of a functional group to make a difference on watercraft activity on Owasco Lake. Hugh Murphy from West Lake Road has agreed to be acting Chairman for this committee. Please call (315) 255-2870, at his business phone to be included.
